Chili Rasboras are perfect for nano planted tanks.

The Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae) is a tiny freshwater fish. Originating from the slow-flowing peat swamp forests of Borneo, this miniature fish has gained popularity for its striking appearance and relatively undemanding care requirements.

Measuring a mere 0.6 to 0.8 inches (1.5 to 2 centimeters), the Chili Rasbora is one of the smallest fish in the Rasbora family. Despite its size, its brilliant red-orange body and contrasting black markings make it a standout in any aquarium. The vibrant coloration intensifies when the fish is in optimal health and housed in a well-maintained environment.

One of the key attractions of the Chili Rasbora is its peaceful demeanor, making it an excellent choice for community aquariums. They prefer to swim in schools, so keeping them in groups of at least six individuals enhances their sense of security. In larger numbers, these rasboras create a stunning visual display as they move together in unison.

Caring for Chili Rasboras involves creating an environment that mimics their natural habitat. They thrive in soft, acidic water with a pH level ranging from 4.0 to 7.0. The temperature should be maintained between 75 and 82°F (24 to 28°C). Dense vegetation, driftwood, and subdued lighting replicate their native surroundings, providing hiding spots and security.

Feeding Chili Rasboras is relatively straightforward. They are omnivores and accept a variety of foods, including high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen brine shrimp and daphnia. Regular, small feedings throughout the day are recommended to accommodate their tiny mouths and high metabolism.

Here are the recommended water parameters for Chili Rasboras:

  • Temperature: Maintain a temperature range between 75 and 82°F (24 to 28°C). They thrive in warmer water, and a stable temperature is crucial for their overall health.

  • pH Level: Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH level, ideally ranging from 4.0 to 7.0. These rasboras are accustomed to the soft, acidic conditions found in their native environment.

  • Water Hardness (GH and KH): Chili Rasboras prefer soft water. Keep the general hardness (GH) between 1 and 10 dGH and carbonate hardness (KH) between 1 and 5 dKH.

  • Filtration: Provide gentle filtration to maintain water quality without creating strong currents. These fish come from slow-flowing waters, and high water flow can stress them.

  • Tank Setup: Mimic their natural habitat by incorporating dense vegetation, driftwood, and dark substrates. These elements offer hiding spots and create a secure environment for the rasboras.

  • Tank Size and Grouping: While they are small, providing an adequately sized tank is important. A group of at least six individuals is recommended to ensure their comfort and encourage natural schooling behavior.
